It is an exciting time, bringing your new baby home to meet the rest of the family. It can also be a little overwhelming for everyone, including your pets.
As much as we would all like to say our pups are 100% trained and always listen, in reality sometimes that’s not always the case. If you haven’t established yourself as the pack leader yet, these 9 months of pregnancy is probably the best time to start.. If you can’t do this yourself, you could always hire a professional dog trainer.
Here are 5 things to try when introducing your newborn to your dog.

Be aware of the energy you are releasing. Dogs will mirror our emotions. If your feeling anxious, excited or worried, its going to have an effect on your pups behaviour.
Introduce your dog to your baby's scent before introducing your baby. Maybe you have a blanket, a bib or a piece of clothing. Whilst holding the blanket allow the dog to sniff your baby’s scent at a distance, only allowing him to move closer if you say he can. This way your letting your dog know that your baby belongs to you.
If you have an over-excited dog maybe get someone to walk him and tire him out before you get home with your baby. When you arrive home greet your dog alone just in case it gets over-excited and jumps on your baby. Always keep first introductions on a lead so that you can fully control the situation.
Be sure that whoever is holding your baby is in a very calm state of mind when you introduce your dog. Let your dog sniff your baby at a safe distance, not too close for now. As the days go on allow your dog to sniff closer and closer to your baby (always under supervision). This will teach your canine friend to respect your new baby as another pack leader.
Don’t forget your dog. Having a new baby is a big change for everyone, including your pets. It can be easy for us to push them away when at this stage. As busy and as tired as you are, remember to give your dog much love and attention and don’t forget their daily walks.

Remember never to leave your baby unattended around any dog, no matter how much you think you can trust them. Your child’s safety must always be your number 1 priority.
